Devore H. Silvey

Devore H. Silvey, 89, passed away on Friday March 18th 2011.  He was born on December 28th, 1921 to Ernest and Myrtle (Theobald) Silvey in Ohiowa Nebraska. He graduated from Ohiowa High School in 1939.  Devore served in the US Coast Guard from 1942 to 1950. Various assignments included Alaska, Iceland, Greenland, and Atlantic convoy duty.  Following World War II, he was assigned to the USCG Icebreaker Eastwind for two separate attempts to establish a navigable sea lane to the North Pole.  He served in the Naval Reserve from 1957 to 1961. Devore was a Meteorologist for the US Weather Service for 37 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of American Legion Post #3, serving in its Funeral Honors detail, VFW, 40 & 8, Masons, and a charter member of St. Mark’s Methodist Church. Following his retirement, Devore spent many years volunteering at Bryan LGH Medical Center.  Devore married Mary Christo on August 6th, 1947, in Peabody, MA. They celebrated 59 years of marriage.  Devore was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family.

Devore was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, and his brothers Howard and Weldon Silvey. 

Family members include sons Dr. Chris Silvey and wife Marsha, Kevin and wife Mary, all of Lincoln; grandchildren, Joseph of Chandler, AZ, Jessica of Laramie, WY, Jared, Eric, and Alex all of Lincoln; sister-in-law Ethel Gerakaris of Peabody, MA, nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held at Wyuka Funeral Home, Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 11:00 A.M.

Memorials may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, or to the Veterans Memorial Garden.
