Gladys Spencer Brown Hogg, 93, of Lincoln, died Jan. 29, 2015. She was born Nov. 26, 1921 in Oakland, Iowa, the daughter of Will and Lucy Spencer. Her father was the president of the Oakland Savings Bank. Gladys graduated from Oakland High School, and Christian College in Columbia, Missouri (Columbia College). She trained as a nurse in Omaha, Nebraska; there she met and married Dr. John A. Brown III and they moved to Shreveport, LA for his internship; they lived in many places in the U.S. until he went overseas. After the war they moved to Lincoln, John passed away in 1972. John and Gladys had two daughters, Joann and Brenda. Gladys returned to the University of Nebraska to finish her bachelor’s degree, and was active in the community. She loved bridge so much that she ran a bridge club and taught bridge at the local community college. At a bridge tournament she met Bill Hogg. They were married in 1977 and lived in Lincoln and Columbus for several years; then moved to Florida where they had 22 acres and became snowbirds. Lucky friendships gave them an introduction to teach bridge and run duplicate bridge games on cruise ships for more than 30 years — what an opportunity! From 1976 until 2006 they spent many months cruising the world: five trips to Russia and eastern Europe; many times from London to the North Cape in Norway; eight weeks in the South Pacific (China, Japan and beyond); through the Panama Canal 21 times; up and down both sides of South America; many cruises in the Mediterranean; to Africa and India; and many cruises in the Caribbean. Overall, they logged more than 2,500 days aboard ship, worked on 25 different vessels, and visited over 100 different countries. They were happy and lucky, loved people and adventures. Gladys and Bill moved from Florida to the Kansas City area many years ago, recently living at Park Meadows Senior Retirement Center in Overland Park.

Survived by her daughter, Joann Brown; her children, Jim Nelson, John (Deb) Nelson; and Greg DeSatnick, son of Brenda Brown DeSatnick. She is also survived by Bill’s daughters Susan Macauley Ferris and her children Shauna Macauley and Mark Macauley; and Bill’s daughter Jane Krizer, her children Kathy Krizer; and John Garrett Krizer, his wife Angie, and their two boys Evan and Andrew.

Many current members of our club remember the different roles that Glady played in promoting bridge in our community and the very active part she took in our club. After she moved we all missed her leadership and cheerful participation.
