Trude Schomer

SchomerTrude Schomer went to be with the Lord on April, 22, 2015.  She passed away peacefully in the home she loved, surrounded by the family and animals she loved and who loved her deeply in return.  Born April 09, 1923, she recently celebrated her 92nd birthday and stated how blessed she was to share the day with so many friends and family.

Trude is survived by her daughter Trude Carol Farrell, Edgewater, Florida, her son Tommy Joe Schomer, Lincoln, six grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Trude lived each day with optimistic enthusiasm.  She opened Trude’s Dog Motel in 1963 and operated it continuously until now.  Her passion and caring devotion for the well being of “her dogs” never diminished.  Many generations of Lincolnites have confidently entrusted the care of their canine family members to Trude, never doubting that each one would receive individual attention and the best of care.  With Trude, caring for her charges was never a “job”, it was her “life”.  Over the years she cared and found homes for many homeless pups.

In addition to her family and her dog motel, her other passions were her prize winning roses which she shared generously, and offering a safe haven for turkeys, deer, songbirds and the other wildlife which she provided for.

Her success earned her the Chamber Outstanding Woman Owned Business of the Year award in 2008.  If there was a need, Trude was always there.  To those of us who have had the privilege of sharing life with her, Trude will remain “forever young” in our hearts.

Visitation at Wyuka Monday, April 27, 2:00 pm ‘till 8:00 pm, with family present 7:00 pm ‘till 8:00 pm.  Celebration of her life at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church on Tuesday April 28th at 10:00 am followed by burial at Wyuka.

Memorials in lieu of flowers to the Capitol Humane Society.

  1. So sorry to hear about Trude. For years she was a neighbor a mile to the North that always waved when she went by. She had her “Dog Motel” sign on our corner for years and would stop by to say hello from time to time. She was always a go-getter that was much younger than her years. She will be missed in the neighborhood by all of us and the dogs she loved so much.

  4. When we were new dog parents in the early 80’s we took our Scotty to Trude’s. To meet Trude was a lovely experience & we knew right away our “kid” would be well taken care of & loved like her own. She will be sorely missed, but it’s comforting to know that now Trude takes care of all the pets that have gone over the rainbow bridge. Many blessings to her family~

  5. I am so sad to hear bout her passing. I had worked for her a long time ago at her dog motel, and hearing about this broke my heart. She was always a great lady and a great boss. I loved how much love she had for the dogs, as well as any other animal. She took great care of her dogs, employees and customers. I remember one dog who was there often, he had passed away, he was a great dog and she knew him from a puppy. When I came to work that day she sat me down and started crying. She told me about what happened, Tuff was his name. It was so sad and at that moment I knew how much she truly cared about each and every one of her dogs that came to her motel. I hope that she is reunited with Tuff in heaven. My thoughts and prayers are with her children and the rest of her family and friends.

  6. My Dad introduced me to Trude years ago. He did the plumbing in her house plus the motel. We were even fortunate enough to have gotten a few “furry family members” from her. Every year I would send Trude a Christmas card with Phoebe on Santa’s lap and then Maya on Santa’s lap. Trude would always send a card telling me to give either Phoebe or Maya a hug from her. Last year Trude even sent me a card from Maya telling me how great of Mom I was! She was a very special lady and she’ll be missed by many.

  7. We echo the sentiments of all the other comments. Great lady. She loved our dogs too (little Maltese brothers) because she used to have a pair of the same breed, until she gave them away to someone she knew who needed them more.
We always felt good with them staying at Trude’s. Ironically we were both thinking of her, just this past weekend, when we discussed a pending vacation. We knew our “boys” would have to stay with Trude again.
I asked her once how long she could her Motel going? She said she was going to do it –until she couldn’t. But had no plans on retiring. “Afterall, her babies still needed her!”
She’ll be greatly missed by pets and people alike throughout Lincoln.

  8. When you walk into Trudes you will see a picture on the wall of my husband on his bike with Eddie on the back. Trude thought it was so cute. She was a very wonderful lady. Eddie could hardly sit still when we told him he was going to see Trude. We always knew he was going to be just fine with Trude and Darla and all the rest of the care givers. You are all the best because you worked for the Best Lady ever!!!!!!!

  13. I am so sorry to hear of Trude’s passing. I would have gone to her funeral had I known before today. She always made me feel so good about our little Gus. She kept his picture hanging in the lobby of the office. And he was always so excited to see her. She greeted him so warmly, as I am sure she did with all her “clients.” She spoke so very highly of her children, especially her son Tommy, as he is in law enforcement and so is my son Jamie, the canine officer in Loveland, Colorado. You will be very sorely missed, Trude. I don’t know how we will ever find another person who cared so dearly for Gus as you did.
