Carolyn Rosalie Pierson, age 76, of Lincoln, passed away early on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Tabitha Nursing Home
after a valiant fight with cancer. Born February 15, 1939 in Niskayuna, NY; the daughter of Louis H. Somerfeldt and Agatha Martin, she was raised in Schenectady, NY.
A National Honor Society member – growing up she had a book of her poems published; did Red Cross life guard training; held the NY State girls NRA national rifle championship. She received scholarships to the Rhode Island School of Design and to Russell Sage College of Nursing. She entered the U.S. Navy in Oct. 1959 and was discharged in June 1960. Carolyn graduated from BYU with a BA in 1972; also an AS in Civil Drafting from SECC.
She married Emil E. Pierson in Nov. 1960 in Schenectady, NY. – blessed with eight children, Laura Reichert(Greene, NY), Margrethe Pierson (Magnolia, AR), Kristina Karp (Wilmington, NC), Emil Pierson (Olympia, WA) , Anna Johnson (Federal Way, WA), Rebekah Hoyt (Lincoln, NE), Erika Deen (Smithville, MO), Judith Dunn (Spearfish, SD).
Carolyn is survived by her husband; eight children; 31 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters; one brother; nephews and nieces.
She has worked as a nurse, a computer programmer (Donnelly Marketing, Woodman Accident & Life, Lancaster County); in a candy line at Russell Stovers; and with the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. She loved old houses, their architecture, and visiting art museums. Active in the Nebraska Herbal Society; she loved to work in her garden, providing a sanctuary for people and animals. She was very active in genealogy and worked at the Family History Center of the LDS Church and taught classes.
Visitation for adults will be Saturday, June 13, 2015, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Wyuka Funeral Home, 3600 “O” Street, Lincoln. The Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 15 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 640 N. 56th St., Lincoln. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Wyuka Cemeter ,3600 “O” Street, Lincoln. Memorials to the National Audubon Society. Condolences at www.wyuka.com
Jim and I were sorry to hear about Carolyn. We extend our sympathy and our best wishes for the family members and hope you are able to find peace. Carolyn was a lovely woman and we enjoyed our association for the few years we lived in Lincoln.

So sorry to hear about Sister Pierson’s passing. She was a sweet women with a heart of gold. In our short time in Lincoln, I often ran into her while she was on fun outings with her grandchildren at the county fair, zoo and Children’s Museum. She loved her family and life. May your heavy hearts feel peace and comfort because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ that is may lift your heart so you may look forward to the eternities with her.
