Jerome “Jerry” L. Zimmer, age 80, of Lincoln, died unexpectedly Wednesday evening September 28, 2016 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, surrounded by his family. Jerry was born to Mae ( Plattner) and Nicholas Zimmer on September 30, 1935 in Del Norte, Colorado. Jerry earned his degree from Colorado State University where he was a member of the rodeo and square dancing programs. Jerry impacted lives as a teacher, long-time Farmers National farm manager and UNL Guest/Security Relations and Event Staff employee.
Jerry is survived by his wife Helen (Frank) Zimmer; sons, Nick Zimmer and wife Nancy (Red Oak, IA), Keith Zimmer and wife Michelle (Lincoln); grandsons Logan and Caden Zimmer; sister in-law Cheryl Cole (Broomfield, Colorado), niece Stephanie Van Scoyk and many other family members and loved ones. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Leonard, Robert and Don Zimmer along with several infant brothers.
Jerry enjoyed the many sporting events of Logan and Caden, walking with his wife and attending athletic and other special events throughout Lincoln. Jerry was a proud member and volunteer of St. Marks Church in Lincoln. Jerry was a Veteran of the United States Army. He served as Deputy District Governor with the Lion’s Club.
A visitation will be held at Wyuka Funeral Home from 2:00 till 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 till 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 2nd. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3rd at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church at 84th and Pioneers in Lincoln.
Memorials in lieu of flowers to the University of Nebraska Student-Athlete Experience Fund, the Montgomery County Family YMCA or St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.

My condolences to Jerry’s wife (Helen) and his family. I have had the opportunity to work with Jerry as an Event Staff usher, over the past three years, at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Jerry was always very friendly and outgoing and a great usher. He always had something funny to say and I always looked forward to working with him. Jerry was so very kind to all patrons attending events at the arena. He was a man who I want to emulate in my life.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of one of my favorite event staff friends. I enjoyed his witty nature, attitude and friendliness with myself and others as we worked side by side at events. Helen and family. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Jerry’s death. I have a tear in my eye as I write this. I always enjoyed being picked on by him at athletic events, and picking back at him. He was a good man and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
I will be out of town on Sunday, and have work obligations on Monday, but my thoughts are with you and your family.
Jerry always had a ready smile and was a great person to work with. I always enjoyed visiting with him at Farmers National Company functions. He was a very good person and will be missed.
Jerry was such a delight to know…with his dry sense of humor and wit, he always made me smile. He was so very proud of his family and loved each and every one of them, especially his wonderful wife, Helen. I will miss seeing him at all the UNL and Pinnacle Bank events we worked together, but expect to see him again someday in the ever green fields of forever!

I am saddened to learn of the passing of my friend Jerry. He was always a great co-worker for UNL Athletics and a wealth of information for me as a second-career teacher. Jerry was a wonderful man. We both were long-time employees of Farmers Natl Co. I had the great fortune to train with him on several occasions in late 1980’s. Jerry was a very successful as a professional farm manager and I learned much from him.
He was also a heck of a good ping pong player!

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I remember you father from the old West Wood neighborhood in Wayne. He was a quality man respected by all. Time will heal the sadness and tears will be replaced by great memories of your father. My sympathies.
