Many famous final resting sites have turned into pilgrimages, proving that some celebrities’ legacies are forever.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe’s remains lie in Westwood Memorial Park, Los Angeles. It’s a small cemetery, so you won’t find it hard to spot her. She’s in an above-ground crypt off to the left corner, marked by dozens of kiss stains left by devoted fans. The nameplate has to be replaced from time to time because it keeps oxidizing from the lipstick marks. She has been there since 1962, buried three days after her tragic death.

 

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley rests in The Meditation Garden found in Graceland, Memphis. It’s one of the most famous graves in the world, visited by more than 600,000 fans from around the globe every year. “The King” died more than three decades ago, but his devotees remain loyal. They adorn his grave with flowers, sing his songs, and kneel to pray. However, it wasn’t always this idyllic. His original burial site was in Forest Hills Cemetery, but he was transferred because people often tampered with his grave. 

 

Princess Diana 

While Princess Diana lived her life under the media’s scrutiny, she now rests in peace away from the public. She’s kept safe on a small island in the middle of Round Oval lake, found within the Spencer family’s estate in Althorp, West Northamptonshire. Not many people have access to the island, but mourners are allowed to visit Princess Diana’s shrine built near the lake. From there, you can see her gravesite marked by a white urn.

 

Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee has inspired many through his craft and philosophy, and fans still show appreciation by visiting his grave in Lakeview Cemetery, in Seattle. Around 10,000 visitors come to pay their respects every year. There’s even a story that three Mongolian men traveled 3,700 miles by foot for several months to see their idol. Bruce Lee rests with his son, Brandon Lee, who died on the set of an action movie after a stunt went awry. 

 

J.R.R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of the epic fantasy novel “Lord of the Rings,” is buried in Wolvercote Cemetery, North of Oxford. He rests with his beloved wife, Edith, to whom he was married for 50 years. Upon his request, “Beren” was placed under his name on the gravestone and “Luthien” under his wife’s. These names were from Middle-earth mythology, which he created himself.  

 

John F. Kennedy

When President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, his wife, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, decided to bury him in Arlington. She wanted him to be in a place that was easily accessible to the American public. During the first year of his death, around 3,000 visitors showed up at his grave every hour. By his third death anniversary, there had been over 16 million visitors. To accommodate the large crowds, cemetery officials built him a new gravesite in 1967. An eternal flame lit by Mrs. Kennedy marks JFK’s burial place.
