Harvey Joseph “Ace” Schmid, 79, of Lincoln, died April 12, 2015. Born April 21, 1935 in Mason City, NE to Charles and Colia (Burnett) Schmid.
From 1955-1960 “Ace” served in the US Air Force. In later years, he served in and retired from the NE Air National Guard. He maintained a strong identification with his military service throughout his life, and it was a source of great pride for him.
Ace will be most remembered as a singer and musician, playing often in a number of different country western and bluegrass bands both in Nebraska and in Texas.
Survived by former wife Alona; children, Bambi (Brian Wilson), Shawn, Casey (Lisa), Derek (Brenda Walker), Tyler, and Shadlee Jo (Ryan) Meinke ; grandchildren, Morgan (Jeff) Krull , Bruce, Kris, Mason, MacKenzie, and Connor; great grandchild, Bruce; brother, Dean (Carolyn); sister, Peggy Dye; brother in law, Eugene Chartraw; sisters in law, Lois, Joan, and Alice (Cox); 14 nieces and nephews; and over 30 great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by one unborn child; his parents; brothers, Charles, Harley (twin), Alfred, and Leo; sisters, Gerry Korensky and Frances Chartraw; brothers in law, Frank Korensky and Lloyd Dye; niece Bonnie Jean Chartraw; nephew Roger Badberg; and former in laws, LaVerne and Vera Cox, and Larry Cox.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, April 25, at St. Teresa’s, 735 So. 36th Street, Lincoln with Burial immediately following at Wyuka Cemetery with Military Honors; a Reception will follow at the Church. A Visitation will be held at Wyuka Funeral Home on Friday, April 24th, from 6:oo – 8:00 pm with a Rosary Service at 6:30 pm. Monsignor Nemec will be Officiating all Services. Harvey was like a second Father to me. He took shawn and I and the boys to every Pius football home and away game from 4th grade till 8th grade, Shawn and I would sit in the back of the station wagon. Harvey would be up front singing country. I always recall him sitting on is front porch picking away at his gituar. I have many fond memories. My prayers to the family. Tim Higgins
So sorry for your loss! My husband, Bill Thomas, and Harve were quite a pair! Yes, they both worked at Linweld. Bill is gone now since 2013 but I can still hear him say “Harvey Joe from Broken Bow” is coming over for a beer. Both loved country music at that time and they enjoyed each other’s company just sitting on the deck. My deepest condolences to all the family. We are sorry for you loss. Harvey was a good man. He will be missed by his extended family in Broken Bow! Harvey visited my mom and dad on occasion, and was known as “Ace” in our household. Harvey called my dad “Squawk” and my mom “Mrs. Squawk”. Harvey did love to sing and visit!…like I said…a good man! We are thinking of you. Connie
