On the morning of May 20th Joyce Martin passed away in Lincoln, NE at the age of 89. She was born in 1929 in L’Anse, MI. She received her nursing degree in Milwaukee, WI and began a life of adventure working in Colorado, California, Oregon, Alaska and finally Minnesota. She was a nurse for over 30 years and when she retired she took up painting and she was a founding member of the Gallery North in Bemidji, MN. This was a special part of her life and she treasured the friends she made there. She was a great mother and grandmother and treasured her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents Leo and Laura LeDuc, her sister Jackie Melio, her first husband Robert Short and her second husband Ivan Martin. She is survived by her daughters Heather Short and Molly Short and her granddaughters Brianna Fields and Sarah Osgood.
I enjoyed working with your mother at Beltrami County nursing service back in the early to mid-80s. I remember sitting right next to her desk and transcribing the nurses notes on a typewriter pretty much in her ear. She was a good sport and a very nice lady. I am sorry for your loss.
I worked with your mother at the county nursing service and liked her so much. All my sympathy to you and the rest of her family. Such a nice lady.
Judy Carr Dowhower.
Joyce was such a kind and thoughtful person, and I loved getting to know her when I worked with her at Gallery North. We had so much fun there, as well as going to the Artists of Minnesota shows. She did such lovely paintings — I especially remember how thrilled we all were when she won a blue ribbon at the show here in Bemidji! She shared with me some wonderful stories about her time in Alaska, and other life adventures. So sorry to hear of her passing — my sympathies to all of the family.

I enjoyed many phone conversations with Joyce over the years and remember her for humor, thoughtfulness, kindness, and love for her family both near and far. I’m blessed to have known her. My sympathy goes to her daughters and granddaughters especially. She told me many times how good you all were to her. Mary Campbell
I am so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. She and my mom, Dee Saltee, were great friends. Gallery North was a dream of theirs and others. They made it a wonderful success! I enjoyed your mom when she came over or I saw her at Gallery North. May her memories help you through the days ahead.
