Yung Y. Chung

Chung, Yung Y.Yung Yung Chung passed peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2015, Omaha, Neb. Her health had deteriorated after surgery for abdominal cancer. It was her third surgery for the disease. She was also a breast cancer survivor.

The 11th child in her family, Yung was born on Oct. 5, 1934, in Hong Kong, British Commonwealth. She was educated in England, and earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from St. Mary College, Durham University (Durham, England) in 1959.

She came to the U.S. after graduating to live with her sister Sui Tong Fung in Ames, Iowa. There Yung met and married Dr. Hui-Ying (Charlie) Chung. They had two daughters and eventually moved to Lincoln where Charlie was an associate professor of electrical engineering at the University of Nebraska. Both became U.S. citizens in 1968.

Yung demonstrated her entrepreneurial spirit when she opened Hong Kong Pizza King restaurant with a family friend in the mid 1970s. After running the restaurant, which operated near the UNL campus, for seven years, she worked at companies including Baker Hardware, Foote & Davis Midamerica Webpress, Alltel, and Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital before retiring in 2006.

Yung and Charlie enjoyed attending Chinese community socials and the University of Nebraska events until Charlie passed away Aug. 20, 1992.

After retirement, she traveled to Hong Kong, Canada, Alaska, and other locales. Highlights included a cruise of the Yangtze River with daughters, a family reunion cruise to Ensenada, Mexico and reuniting with her sister in Tianjin, China.

Yung enjoyed classical concerts, and recently attended Paul McCartney, the Lion King and Wayne Newton. She loved shopping and a good deal. She especially enjoyed a good meal of dim sum with family and friends. She doted on her grand dogs.

Yung is survived by her daughters Janet Chung (Pat Raybould) and Dorothy Chung Javorsky (Tim Javorsky), both of Lincoln; beloved dogs Radcliff, Ina, and Josh; sister Suet Haan Chan, of Tianjin, China; nieces and nephews.

Cremation, no visitation. The family plans a Celebration of Life service for 10 a.m. Jan. 4, 2016, at Wyuka Funeral Home. Food will be served after the service.   1. Sorry to hear about your Mother. I remember working with Yung while she was at Madonna Accounting Dept. I helped train her and she always had a great smile and laugh. She had a great “saying” that always made me laugh too. I still have the necklace she gave me.
